There are still no bona fide cheats for Gran Turismo 1, 2 or 3. However, just like in the other two games there are bits which can make progress a little easier.
Firstly, the licence tests. The collision detector active in the licence tests is a little iffy. It only detects impacts above a certain speed, or within a certain angle of the front, or at above a certain force value (for those moments when the tail slams into a corner you’ve just exited). This makes some of the licence tests a little easier. The most obvious example is the brake tests B-1 and B-2. If you begin the test by drifting over to the right or left, near to the barriers, when it comes to braking you can simply ease the car up against the barrier whilst slowing down. This means you can brake much later and slow down much quicker. Now if anyone fails to get a gold after reading that, they need shooting. I guess another good example is S-7, the Griffith around SSR11. There are three sharp hairpins on this track. Each can be negotiated by rubbing up against the barrier on the outside of the corner (although the second one takes a lot of work to judge). As long as you keep the nose pointing enough away from the barrier, an impact won’t register and you can whip round at 100 km/h or more - careful not to lose it though. Good driving is still needed to hit the gold though. Submit any licence times doing this on the online database sites and they'll toast your figgin.
Secondly, I’m informed that if your tuned motor has passed it’s prime and the power is starting to plummet, don’t panic! By removing the tuned parts, and then reinstalling them (such that can be removed and refitted) you’ll recover a great deal of the lost power. If there’s none fitted though, tough.
Thirdly, there’s the "Rubber band cheat" - for gruelling races such as "Like The Wind" on Test Track, and particularly the Super Speedway endurance race, some unscrupulous folks have taken to Zen Driving, or driving without any actual driving. The idea runs like this - set the controls to analogue right stick up for accelerate. Wrap an elastic band around the bottom of the stick and up over the shoulder of the controller, to keep the stick held up. Go and have a cup of coffee, game of petanque, sex, watch a film (although obviously not a DVD) etc. Come back in an hour and collect the prize money and car.
Last but not least there’s the car collector’s friend - two memory cards and save before the last race. If you’re after a particular car, enter the series with that car as a prize. Save before the last race. Win the last race. If you get the wrong car, reload and win the last race again until you get the right one. The second memory card is for storing an alternate garage with rare cars in - the black or white FTO LM, for example - to buy as and when you feel like it. And they never run out of stock…
