Headlines: And so, the end is near (well, gone)... 1st kart.no.38; 2nd manu-cobalt; 3rd jimeez. Well done chaps!

Not-The-Nine-Boards-Challenge (NT9BC)

In the beginning, there was the GT3 Nine Boards Challenge. The nine major GT3 forums got together and raced off to see who was the best.

Then, there was the GT39B2. This time round it suffered from a slight misnomer, in that there were actually 10 boards taking part. But then one of them pulled out because the first race was too hard. So that's alright. And it was persistantly dogged by (unfounded) allegations of cheating, favouritism and "disqualify as many drivers as you can". And the races were mainly bollocks (no relation to the actual driver called "bollocks"). So it wasn't really much fun, which isn't the point of a computer game, really.

NOW there's the "Not-The-Nine-Boards-Challenge" (or the snappy acronym NT9BC, if you like). 10 races which are, hopefully fun, open to all drivers from all boards (and hawked around thus). And you as well if you want.

The Racers:

The racers list is:

Arwin: Using the excuse that he's dislocated his shoulder... Yeah, we can all see through that one... :D Trying to make us underestimate you...
daan: A recently-emerging talent from an already well-known nice guy. Underestimate him and die.
Doohan: If Danes don't like to see Carlsberg leaving, imagine how they must feel about Doohan's replays... The most feared track-Escudo in the west...
Famine: That's me, although I won't be submitting times for the places.
Frustrated Palm Tree: Ah, but which one? Either way, neither father or son should really use a name with "Frustrated Palm" in it.
Ganesh: He may be named after a god, but at least he loves his TVRs. From the home of Jaguar too, so watch out!
GT3EMPEROR: Is currently learning why it's not a good idea to let your kids choose your screenname. A well-known coffin-dodger, but age and treachery beat youth and exuberance...
jimeez: Goldjunkie extraordinaire. Be afraid. Be very afraid...
kart no. 38: GT3Times' leading South African light. And if you don't believe me, check out the top Grand Valley times.
ledhed: Pie!
manu-cobalt: My first French participant - an inhabitant of GTPlay. Don't know much about him, but that's probably more my fault than his...
Mistral: Another scary driver. Threw together great finishes in the 9 Boards and two GTDs. Help.
Rod: GTN, and would really rather be playing football by this point.
Thrasher_187: Denizen of GT3Times and possibly the largest single GT3-related message poster of all time.

The Administration:

Der bosses of this series are well... me. The fine gentleman known as "Thrasher_187" will be providing assistance, mainly because he's such a forums whore that no-one can accuse him of favouritism. And he's pretty funny. After the series has ended, I'll enlist the help of someone able to view NTSC replays, for such verification as is needed.

This means that, although I'll be running the races and putting my times up, I won't be getting points for it.

Time Submissions:

Time submissions are only accepted from people who've actually been chosen to race. But don't let me stop you from trying the races and see how you match up with the... ahem... best.

For those of you actually IN the series, please submit times to me at famine01@hotmail.com. Regular Famine e-mailers will note that this address is different than usual, but then I've only got 15% of my inbox free on the other one.

Submissions should include at least the following information:

Verification:

Generally it's good form to save a replay. I won't be sitting here and reviewing all the replays myself because, frankly (and contrary to some opinions) I have a life. But if you win the round, expect to be asked for a replay to be sent to me. This means you either have an Xport/Sharkport (preferred) or mail it to me (NOT preferred. Especially NTSC-toting-types) OR make a video clip of it OR even record it onto a videotape and mail that (so NOT preferred it isn't even funny).

I won't ask you to keep the replays for more than a month after the series, so if you cheat and get past that, you're okay. BUT if you cannot provide a replay, you will be disqualified from that race.

If, in your replay, you breach any one of the - probably as brief as possible - rules, you'll be disqualified. This has absolutely no bearing on my opinion of the rest of your times submitted at any of the numerous times databases the world over, just that you didn't make it this time. So if you're DQed, don't go apeshit at me.

The RULES:

I'll try to keep this as brief as possible.
1 - Contact: For all races, the following rules apply. Any contact where the vehicle speed drops by 20mph/32km/h (damn zonal speed crap) or more is regarded as a major contact. Any contact where the vehicle speed drops by less than 20mph/32km/h is regarded as a minor contact. There is some possible version difference in how speed is represented, so if your speed drop is regarded as minor by EITHER version, then it is a minor contact. I will NOT be using fancy video equipment (or in fact ANY) to check contacts - so if it can only be seen by frame-by-frame replay on a VCR then it's not a contact. But if it can be seen on a PS2 with the pause button in operation it is. Deliberate use of walls for any reason merits an instant disqualification.
2 - Offs: For all races, the following rules apply. A wheel is considered "off" when there is clear space between it and any driving surface (tarmac, rumble strips, any painted lines on the road surface). Any situation where the vehicle has 4 wheels off-track is regarded as a major off. Any situation where the vehicle has 3 wheels off-track is regarded as a minor off. Where any doubt exists, benefit is given to the driver. I will still NOT be using fancy video equipment to check offs - so if it can only be seen by frame-by-frame replay on a VCR then it's not an off. Again though, if I can spot it on the PS2 with the pause button, it is an off. Deliberate use of non-track sections will merit an instant disqualification.
3 - AI Interaction: For all races, the following rules apply. Contact with AI cars should be avoided, really. But they aren't always avoidable. As in real life, gentle nudges up the inside of an AI car is acceptable (and if you think this is wrong, go watch British Touring Cars). But any situation in which at least 32km/h is rubbed off your speed by the driver's own actions is regarded as a major contact as in rule 1. If the AI rams you from behind, that's not your fault - feel free to block their line and have them push you along if you wish. Additionally, for races specified in GT/Simulation Mode, you must start from 6th place on the grid - do not qualify for races.
4 - Cleanliness: For all races, the following rules apply. You MUST average less than 1 minor incident (minor off/minor contact) per lap, of which there must be no more than 1 major incident (major off/major contact) per full 2.5 laps. This means: To some this may appear lenient, but it is a computer game and the most important aspect is the fun part. This system allows fun and a passable standard of driving.
5 - Car Standards: All cars described are allowed UP TO the highest tuner part mentioned, with oil change, car wash and non-standard alloys/rims is desired. No penalty will be made for under-tuned cars. If you enter a hybrid, expect to be branded a cheat for the rest of your days (unless it's an accidental hybrid, which HAS happened and is easily picked up). Although if a hybrid car is described then you're alright. Where settings are concerned, you must only use settings that can be reached by that car within the game - hybrid settings are not allowed. Other settings which assist the car regardless of most known laws of physics - such "Wheelie Settings" for example - are not allowed.
6 - Disqualifications: If you breach any of the above rules, you will be disqualified from that race. If you fail to provide a replay upon request, you will be disqualified from that race. Disqualification only affects individual races in this competition, and is in no way an indicator of the veracity of any times submitted to other OLRs or forums.
7 - Time Submissions: Each race will start at 00:00 GMT on Mondays. You are allowed a full week for each race and so must submit at 23:59 GMT on Sundays. I will attempt to post on this site the unoffical results (pending replays) by 21:00 on Monday.
8 - Ranking: Unlike other series, I will not be awarding points for places - I can't think of a single points system in history that SOMEONE hasn't hated. Therefore the overall rankings will be calculated using average position. Since the series is designed to find the best all-round driver (well, and for fun too) it is only sensible that a 0-x metre test or hotlap should carry the same weighting as a 20 lapper. Your average ranking will be calculated by your total places divided by the number of races completed. If you fail to submit a time or are disqualified for any one race, you will be given a last place ranking (however many DNFs there are). You are then ranked on that average:

For no apparent reason, I've added total time and race wins columns on the leaderboard. This has no bearing on your final ranking - except in the case of a tie (unlikely, but then it'll be done by average ranking, then race wins, then total time) - so is there for interest's sakes. And the whole "Yeah, but I did WIN a race" thing.

Thrasher can be forgiven, as his PS2 died just before the competition start. But the rest of you non-starters? Tut tut tut...

GT3EMPEROR has been ill for a while. Or "drunk" as we prefer to call it. So he's forgiven too.

Famine (that'll be me then) is a "Non-Competing Driver". Although I may be above you in the table, I will not take ranking position away from you (i.e. if I'm in first (schyeah, right) the next driver will be ranked first).

Various other guest drivers may pop in from time-to-time and they will also be classed as NCDs.

Now the series has finished, a big "Thank You!" to the 5 drivers who returned a time in every event - nice going folks. A large congratulations too to the 1-2-3 of kart.no.38, manu-cobalt and jimeez. Well done you three - they carved up every race win between them too...

Return to the GT3 Apocalypse Zone.
