Online Racing

Although it's going to be a little while before PS2 users see truly online racing, it does exist in many forms.

Generally speaking what happens is that someone sets a challenge (usually one they think they're pretty good at themselves), invites participation and collects time submissions from the drivers. Of course this relies a lot on the honesty of drivers - something which doesn't always happen (coughcough chevyALMS). Solutions exist - generally the larger GT3 community knows what is possible and what isn't, which drivers are routinely honest and which aren't. Devices such as the Xport/Sharkport, which allow you to save replays to your PC hard drive then send them round the world, are a help. But they're not owned by all (which is a pity - they cost as much as 1 memory card, and give you whatever space you have on your hard-drive, internet space, work hard-drive, work account etc. etc. etc. to store replays in, rather than just 8Mb.

A good challenge to start on is my very own "Worst Car Wins" challenge - which is a lot more fun than the serious challenges. To get an idea of the sterner tests go to any one of the websites I endorse on my homepage and visit the OLR/User Challenges forums.

Worst Car Wins 2 will be appearing soon, although both serieseses have no closing date.

ledhed's Ricer Rumble - basically an FF 400m sprint challenge - is fairly easy to get into. Not quite so easy to lead though.

The largest recent OLR competitions were Gran Turismo Drafting and GTD2 at GTN, the original 9 boards challenge - a race between the best of each of the major GT forums - and the upcoming 9B2, the second 9 boards challenge to take place in January 2003. I'm on the GTN team, by the way...

Speaking of the 9 Boards Challenge 2, there doesn't appear to be a website for it. Well, not until now, anyway

And the soon-to-be-launched "Not-The-9-Boards-Challenge", designed to be the total antithesis of 9B2. Go see the page and sign up.
